Reading

At Wittering, we believe that reading is a fundamental skill for everyday life that opens up a world of knowledge and imagination.

Our key aim is to foster a real passion and enjoyment for reading through the use of high-quality and diverse fiction and non-fiction texts, poetry and rhymes.

Our reading journey starts in the Early Years where children are exposed to a large range of high-quality stories, poems and rhymes fostering a language rich environment; this leads on to the teaching of decoding skills through the use of Twinkl Phonics to develop independent readers; finally, comprehension skills are developed using the use of reading skills.

All children have access to a range of texts in our libraries and book corners. Teachers help to foster the passion for reading by setting aside time daily to read and share texts with the children. This facilitates a discussion on the text and exposes children to a wider vocabulary.

At home

Research shows that the quality of reading, reading together and sharing and discussing stories all have the most impact on successfully developing reading. Each week, your child’s teacher will encourage you to complete the reading record with them. You can also use it to record discussions you have about books, authors, characters, settings and vocabulary.

We ask that you listen to your children read at least 3 times a week. Please ensure your child’s Book Band Book, Reading Challenge Book and Reading Records are brought into school everyday because they will be used in lessons throughout the week.

It would also be beneficial to the progression of reading, if your child was read to. Please do spend time listening and reading to your child. We all know the power of language development and the part reading has to play in boosting your child’s vocabulary. Please do continue to be an influence in your child’s reading journey.
