Curriculum Intent Statement
The Intent of our curriculum is to enable children to learn important knowledge, skills and concepts so they make meaning of the world and thrive within it. We offer a rich and vibrant curriculum which is ambitious for all pupils; regardless of their starting points and how long they are with us.
At Wittering Primary School, we work together to create a happy, safe and stimulating environment where children are motivated to learn together. By maintaining high expectation of ourselves and each other, our children will be equipped to encounter opportunities and challenges with resilience and determination. We encourage a curiosity about the world and strive to ensure that our children will contribute positively to it, both now and in the future.
The curriculum is a carefully sequenced narrative of learning so that children build on their skills and knowledge during each year, throughout their years in school and across the different subjects they cover.
Our curriculum should:
- Identify what the school has chosen to teach, when and why
- Help pupils link new and prior learning
- Make learning accessible to all pupils including those who have SEND
- Identify key vocabulary for each subject and incorporate tier 2 & 3 words into every unit of study
- Develop children's cultural capital
Our whole school curriculum is underpinned by these 6 principles:
Resilience Creativity
Community Belonging
Equality Responsibility
Resilience and Creativity: Try Hard
Understanding these concepts enables children to understand that learning can capture imaginations, empowering them to see things in new ways, with opportunities to explore. Pupils understand that, at times, learning and life can be hard but that they can develop the resilience to overcome these hardships and succeed.
Community and Belonging: Be Kind
Understanding these concepts enables children to understand that a sense of belonging gives feelings of security and identity, which supports academic and social development. Pupils establish a sense of themselves within their local and wider community. There is value in understanding their heritage and believing in the power of those around them to enhance their lives.
Equality and Responsibility: Fly High
Understanding these concepts enables children to understand that everyone is welcome regardless of individual differences, personal circumstances and need. They know equal opportunities for all ensure everyone feels valued, respected and included. Pupils take leading roles to become good citizens and take responsibility to care for the school, local, national and global environments and understand the part they play in its future.
Through high quality teaching and learning our children will reach their full potential and recognise their dreams.
